Allied to Win is filled with timeless leadership lessons told through some seriously fun stories. The author Ed Stevens includes many anecdotes from his experience building a successful e-commerce company, growing up in Cleveland, time spent in Russia, and serving on a submarine in the US Navy. Ed is a very funny writer and speaks from the heart. One area of improvement in the book is that I was left wondering WHY Ed made some of the choices he did. Why did he choose to live and work in Russia after graduating from Stanford? Why did he decide to leave the US Navy after making it through the hardest part of Annapolis? He's definitely lived a very interesting life and has a lot to share and it would be good to know what drove him into each new adventure. In any case, it's a great read. If you are an entrepreneur I recommend this quick read. All Executives in retail, wholesale and/or E-commerce should read this book. I read cover to cover in one day. I couldn't put this book down.
I enjoyed the book. It's easy to read and has a good mix of anecdotes and business lessons. Anyone considering starting a business or selling for a market entry company will find this useful. The 'love' story woven in also provides a unique perspective on how the family life and business worlds influence each other.
Mr. Stevens' book is a great read if you are
a) A student considering starting a business, an experienced professional who is an aspiring entrepreneur, or someone who works with entrepreneurs
b) In the ecommerce or retail field
c) A successful entrepreneur who has felt the joys and pains of growing a business
Interleaving personal stories, professional war stories and insights into a fast, impactful read, Allied to Win is great for reading on a plane or on the beach. I'm giving copies to my employees.
There is so much great 'behind the scenes' info on developing company culture from the ground up and it all starts with the leader. It's not about creating a successful company just to get rich and that's what makes one happy.... This book is about deeply embedding priceless core values throughout every aspect of your life. Ed's stories are funny, inspiring, making this quick read a truly enjoyable experience.
