By Todd Downs The Bicycling Guide to Complete Bicycle Maintenance Repair For Road Mountain Bikes 6th Sixth Edition [Hardcover] Books

Decided to go print instead of digital because I would be using it in garage to do repair work, and print makes it easier to see, read, and flip pages with dirty fingers. Bought it used from Jenson Books for a reasonable price and it arrived in new condition. What a bargain for $8, which included the shipping charge! From a quick glance through pages, I am happy with the illustrations, content and organization. Just what I needed.

Addition after use: Lots of good information but after trying to adjust rear derailluer discovered that instructions seem to assume you have rebuilt the derailluer from scratch and understand the vocabulary. Ended up taking the bike to local bike shop after I managed to make my shifting problem worse. Might not be the best guide for those who only want to do minor adjustments to maintain bike. Still, it is very detailed. Changed from 5 to 4 stars.

My story begins when my wife & I moved south for a warmer climate. Health issues seem to suggest riding a bicycle for therapy. After buying 2 cruisers, knee replacements made it difficult for my wife to get rolling or dismount when stopping. After a couple of spills, her Dr. suggested a three wheel adult trike. The search was on. Upon finding a used trike, one of the back wheels seemed to be bent and it wouldn't change gears. I'm a hands on person so I thought this can't be this difficult! Well, I took the wheel off and took it to a bike shop. Them being very helpful, they were going to have to order the wheel and when I told them about it not changing gears they suggested a tune-up? So, how much will that be?, and to my surprise more than I gave for the trike. WOW!!! My do it myself option was to research the problems online and even after reading some possible solutions I really didn't under-stand it. OH, what about an online manual that I might print off. Well, that didn,t work, however, as I continued my thought process it occurred that I just order the manual then I would have all the info I might ever need. This manual has been a great reference guide w/pictures. With its instructions I tightened the spokes on the wheel(truing) and adjusted the derailers(tuning-up)and the trike is doing fine.
I am a complete beginner to maintaining my own bicycle. The book did guide me through changing out a very cheap bottom bracket with a higher quality cartridge type BB. I also learned how to change out my crank set.

I bought the Edition and it was inexpensive but the graphics were hard to zoom - that could be the device/OS used to run the book.

I should have ponied up the extra money for the printed book. Other than that this book got a complete amateur through a crank set and bottom bracket change with no problem.
Clearly explains various aspects of maintenance, including lots of clear photos of the different types of construction (like the difference between a freewheel and a freehub, and how each is assembled and repaired). I was very familiar with bikes 30 years ago, but a lot has changed since then. This book explains all the tools and terminology, so even if you decide not to attempt the repair yourself, you can still talk intelligently to the bike mechanic about it. (And you will understand why it costs what it does).
Good book. I am getting started with in depth bicycle repair and conversions so I refer to this book a great deal. All the reference you need and more. Easy to follow, step by step instructions. Pictures are bigger and easier to follow than the Blue Book. Both are good.
Wish these types of books addressed hard to remove parts from rust, a common problem for all who works on bikes. I would recommend this book.
The Bicycling Guide to Complete Bicycle Maintenance & Repair for Road & Mountain Bikes [ Edition] by Todd Downs is the best bicycle maintenance book or manual I have found and purchased. I own several bicycles and want to do my own maintenance and if one does, this is in my view the book to own. I also own a Motorcycle and much of the information and knowledge based skills utilized in this book are also good for a thorough maintenance approach to the mechanical maintenancre of a motorcycle. From the basic introduction of the book to the tool recommendations you read at the first of the book, you know you are getting a book that avoids the fluff and gets right to solid information about bicycle maintenance. I love this book and recommend it to the person needing some guidance to working on their bikes and optimization of the setup of your ride.
While this is not the end all repair and maintenance guide it does provide a lot of information. Bicycles have become somewhat specialized and with the advent of youTube and Google there is much more detailed and specific information to be found than what could be contained within the covers of a book without the book becoming a monster. More than the detailed information the book does provide a lot of history of different materials, components and bicycle making in general. It was an enjoyable read from that standpoint alone.
Not exactly for beginners although the author has made a strong attempt to reach this crowd. The first quarter of the book is dedicated to general information about bicycles, how they work, and different styles of bikes. If you like background info, Todd Downs does a pretty decent job of it.

The rest of the book is broken down into the various sections and functions of the bike and goes into more detail on how to service specific items, how to troubleshoot, and some advice on bike maintenance.

Overall, it's an OK book, but it's a toss up on whether it will be an effective reference book for you or not. While the mechanically gifted will get the most out of this book, for beginners the book falls short on levels of being a bit too complex, being too wordy when more graphics or photos would be more appropriate, and sometimes leaving out details that may be obvious to seasoned bike repair artists, but can be missed quite easily by new comers.

Glad I purchased it used and not new. I'll keep it around as a reference, but it won't be my go to book for bike repair.
